Earn Your Certification as a SAIL Instructor and Make an Impact in Your Community
What is SAIL?
Stay Active and Independent for Life (SAIL) is a Title III-D evidence-based fall prevention program designed to enhance strength, balance, flexibility, and overall fitness in adults aged 65 and older. Recognized by the Administration for Community Living, SAIL meets the highest standards for evidence-based programs, making it eligible for federal funding to support community implementation across the United States. By improving mobility and reducing fall risk, SAIL helps participants stay independent for longer and maintain a higher quality of life.
SAIL classes are held 2–3 times per week for one hour and include a warm-up, aerobic exercises, balance and strength training, and stretching, all of which can be performed sitting or standing. The program is designed to be inclusive and accommodate individuals with mild mobility challenges, such as light cane or walker users. Periodic fitness checks help track participants’ general mobility as well as functional upper body and lower body strength to monitor progress and outcomes. Classes are offered in a variety of settings, including community centers, independent and assisted living facilities, and senior housing complexes, and can be led by trained community members, fitness professionals, healthcare providers, and volunteers who have completed SAIL Instructor Training.
All aspiring instructors must complete the initial training, hold current CPR certification, and have at least one year of related experience working with older adults. The SAIL Instructor Training equips instructors with the knowledge, resources, and strategies to start, manage, and promote a program successfully in their community, ensuring long-term participant engagement and positive results. Certifications are valid for up to five years, after which renewal is required to maintain active instructor status.
